Maiasaura Model

Its name, meaning “good mother lizard,” reflects the remarkable nesting discoveries that helped change our understanding of dinosaur behaviour.

Maiasaura lived approximately 76–72 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous in what is now Montana, USA. It grew to around 7–9 metres in length and could have weighed approximately 2–3 tonnes. It was a hadrosaur, or duck-billed dinosaur, with hundreds of small teeth arranged in dental batteries for efficiently processing plant material.

What makes Maiasaura particularly fascinating is the discovery of large nesting colonies containing eggs, nests and young dinosaurs. Fossil evidence suggests that juveniles remained in the nest while they developed, providing important clues about parental care and social behaviour in dinosaurs.
